Caregiver Burnout… This could mean YOU!

caregiver burnout victoriaCaregiver Burnout: An Unhealthy Breaking Point

Providing care for someone you love can be very rewarding.  After years of your loved one taking care of you, it is only natural to want to do the same.  However, in today’s busy lives of parents, children, grandchildren and careers, one can almost feel stretched for time.  The common name for you is “The Sandwich Generation”!

As a member of the Sandwich Generation, many stressors culminate over time and can become detrimental to your own health, especially if you are required to provide long-term care to a loved one. Without additional support, caregiver’s are at risk of developing physical and emotional problems.

Common stressors you may be experiencing:
  • Changing family dynamics
  • Financial strain
  • Balancing other priorities like marriage, children, grandchildren and work
  • Feeling isolated without additional help
  • Feelings of guilt or resentment
Common signs and symptoms of caregiver stress:
  • Anxiety, depression, irritability
  • Feeling tired and run down
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Overreacting to minor frustrations
  • New or worsening health problems
  • Family caregiver’s need to be aware of these signs and symptoms and remember that caregiver’s need care too. Anxiety, depression, irritability
  • Feeling tired and run down
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Overreacting to minor frustrations
  • New or worsening health problems

Retire-At-Home in Greater Victoria recommends caregivers have scheduled time off so that they can have anticipated breaks from their responsibilities, and regain some of their energy. Knowing that someone can look after your loved one,  you can take some time to schedule appointments, relaxation, fun, or care for yourself during these times. It is an important time to reconnect socially with friends and experience light-heartedness outside of your caregiving role.

Caregiving for a loved one is often referred to as ‘a marathon, rather than a sprint’. The more support given to you, the longer you can ward off burnout and provide the care and attention you want to give to your loved one. Giving you respite benefits everyone.

A helpful resource for you, may be the Family Caregiver Network Society.

Retire-At-Home, Victoria, has provided a variety of services including personal care, house-keeping, cooking meals, and companionship as well as taking my father-in-law to doctor and dental appointments, trips to have his hearing aids and glasses repaired, shopping and outings. They monitor and have set up a system to check and make sure that my father-in-law is taking his medication and is eating adequate meals. The care-givers have been wonderful so that their service delivery that started at two days, progressed to three, and now it is five hours per day seven days a week. This would not have been possible without sensitive, caring, and capable staff from Retire-At-Home.
